Striking habit

Very surprisingly occurs in spring growth to development. In Pinus (pines) beautiful candles appear from which the needles grow. Prickly’s Picea’s (spruces) get new soft needles. The fresh spring colors stabbing brightly against the needles of the previous year. Sometimes there is a surprising discoloration such as Picea abies Daisy’s White or Picea orientalis Aureospicata. The new sprouts are bright yellow to almost white while they will become green again later in the year.

Cone carriers

Conifer: that is the actual meaning of the word “conifer. Indeed, this is the most distinctive characteristic of this plant group. Robust and large like the Abies or inconspicuous and as small berries like the Juniper. For birds, they are considered a grateful food source but only pine nuts are eaten by humans. Nevertheless, these fruits are sometimes particularly decorative.

Coloring species

Some conifers change color striking during the year. Microbiota decussata, for example, turns chocolate brown in the winter. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana “Minima Aurea” changes color to bright yellow in the summer. Thuja occidentalis “Fire Chief” turns orange in the spring, changes to bronze red in the summer and deep red in the autumn. The young shoots of conifers can also show surprising colors such as, for example, Podocarpus lawrencii “Red Tip” which are first red and later change to green.
