… a difficult word. The synonym is cristate, but that doesn’t make it any clearer to most people. The root word ‘fascis’ also occurs in ‘to fascinate’. Fascis is Latin for bundle. Fasciation (or cristate) is a phenomenon in which the branches, leaves or flowers grow in a bundle; a kind of crest or comb (=crista). This phenomenon gives fascinating intergrowths and is common in cacti, but also in some conifers.
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Cristata’
This species, as the name says, makes really big combs and is therefore loved as an ornamental green. Especially at this time of year, beautiful Christmas pieces can be made with branches of this Japanese cedar. Although we don’t sell cut branches, nothing is more fun for the consumer to grow their own cut greens. And where do they buy their plants? We still have available!
